Serval Sighting

Kapama Ranger Blog

Last night, Roel van Muiden one of the rangers from Kapama River Lodge had the most awesome sighting – A Serval was spotted hunting!!!

Servals are slenderly built and the tallest of the small African cats. They are often spotted at dusk while foraging for food, which is mainly Rodents and small Birds. While the Serval was being followed using a spotlight, it suddenly stopped and pounced. It had caught a Striped Field Mouse. The guests were enthralled by seeing a rare sighting and event.

This morning an old buffalo bull was found dead close to a watering hole – it had died of natural causes. A carcass provides food for our many vultures and other scavengers found in the area, therefore this evening the rangers will return to see if there has been any activity today.

We will keep you posted.
