Kapama River Lodge Heritage
When Kapama River Lodge first opened its doors in 2005, it was born from a simple vision: to share the raw beauty of the South African bushveld with travellers seeking connection, sanctuary, and wild wonder. Over two decades later, River Lodge has grown into one of the most beloved luxury safari destinations in the Greater Kruger area, celebrating its 21st anniversary, a milestone marked not just by years, but by cherished memories created beneath the African sky.
While our architecture and amenities have evolved dramatically, the heartbeat of Kapama River Lodge remains unchanged: extraordinary wildlife experiences, a deeply balanced wilderness, and the genuine warmth of the people who call this reserve home.
A Vision Rooted in Stewardship
For more than two decades, Kapama River Lodge has welcomed guests into a landscape restored and stewarded with care by the Roode family. What began 21 years ago as a simple accommodation offering quickly matured into a leading all-inclusive safari sanctuary in the Greater Kruger Area.
Growth at River Lodge has always been organic and intuitive rather than bound to a rigid master plan. Every next step, from introducing a world-class wellness spa and welcoming reception to the recent unveiling of our open-air boma and reimagined suites, was guided by a deep respect for the surrounding environment and the evolving needs of our guests.
As Managing Director Bernard Roode reflects, the lodge’s evolution has been a journey of bold decisions and continuous refinement. A pivotal turning point came in 2020, as the world stood still, when Kapama River Lodge took a leap of faith to reimagine its physical foundation from the ground up, setting a new benchmark for the guest experience. Today, while the contemporary architecture and design continue to elevate the lodge, the heart of River Lodge remains unchanged: a dedicated team—including original staff who have been part of the story since day one—committed to crafting unforgettable safari memories.
This connection to nature is woven directly into the guest experience, reflected in the naming of our suites after the iconic trees that define the reserve, including the Marula, Tamboti, and newly introduced Leadwood suites

After these additions, a new wing of interleading suites, our Superior Tamboti Suites, was added and started welcoming guests in December 2025. With the superb finishes and elegant decor from bathroom to bedroom, this was just another small step in enhancing the Kapama River Lodge brand and guest experience.

To ensure all accommodations matched the elegantly reimagined vision of River Lodge, the latest suite enhancements were the Leadwood suites and Leadwood family suites, which opened to guests on 1st August.
Driven by People, Defined by Passion
“The lodge is not only about the beautiful architecture, the interiors, or the spectacular wildlife,” reflects Christiaan Basson, General Manager of Tourism.
“It’s all about the people. People often ask me what it is that we truly do. The best I can answer is, we create memories.”
That dedicated spirit is felt in every detail of a stay at River Lodge. Led by Lodge Manager Mandy Clouston, alongside Assistant Lodge Managers Liezel Holmes and Kinty Tshuketana, and a powerhouse of dedicated, passionate people, our team works tirelessly to ensure every guest feels like family from the moment they step off the airstrip or vehicle.
From the warm smiles that welcome you back from an early morning game drive to the attentive hands crafting your evening meal under a canopy of stars, it is our staff who give River Lodge its unforgettable character. Several team members who were present on opening day 21 years ago are still with us today, standing as a living testament to the enduring sense of family that defines Kapama.
Celebrating with our partners
