A drive of new life and death

Kapama Ranger Blog

With the summer in full swing all creatures big and small are giving birth. While driving today we witnessed a spectacular sight of an Impala giving birth, followed by a whole farrow of baby warthogs. We continued to have some great sighting of Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant. I thought that it couldn’t get any better. As we drove back to the lodge, our tracker picked up some lion tracks and of course not missing out on a chance, I started following them. Not being outdone by the big cats we followed the tracks until we found two lionesses as they were busy stalking a large warthog sow, but I soon realised they weren’t interested in the adult. Because right behind her there were three tiny little piglets, the first lioness charged followed shortly by her younger companion both snatching a piglet and devouring them within a matter of seconds. And so the drive that started out with a new little life being born ended in the loss of two.
