I’ve come to realize over the years of my experience working in the tourism industry that most people prefer to travel on their own and explore the country unguided as this provides a level of freedom regarding where you go and when. This is of course understandable but in my opinion I think guided tours provide so much more. Guided tours allow for more information regarding the sightings as well as more protection regarding dangerous animals such as the big 5. Trained rangers and trackers understand the behaviour of the animal and also certain warning signs that untrained people might not be aware of. Other advantages of having a field guide in the luxury of being able to sit back and enjoy the beauty of the bush, without having to concentrate on roads and directions, flat tyres and other conveniences.
