Whilst driving in a northerly direction, an African Hawk Eagle caught a Natal Francolin in the dry Monwana River bed. My tracker, Ronald, managed to spot the eagle feeding on the dead francolin. As we tried to get closer the eagle took flight leaving the prey on the ground. The bird perched on anearby Tamboti tree, which was already inhabited by a Bateleur. The Bateleur saw the opportunity of an easy meal and flew down to the dead francolin. The African Hawk Eagle was having none of this and quickly returned to claim its hard earned prize, the two birds fought briefly for the kill and finally the African Hawk Eagle flew away with the remains, since the Bateleur was an inexperienced juvenile. We then continued on our drive.
