My first

Kapama Ranger Blog

It’s nearing midnight here at River Lodge, and I’m waiting for the last of our guests to go to sleep for the night. Seems like it might be a while still, as there are quite a few people sitting around the bar talking about the day’s events and what everyone saw on their game drives!

This is my first blog story since I started working here at River Lodge at the beginning of December. It’s been a week of many firsts for me here. My first game drive at Kapama; my first ever pangolin sighting; the first time in my life working 18 hour days for more than a week! Despite the long hours, its a job I’ve dreamed about having since I was a kid, and even though I can barely bring myself to look at the clock at the moment knowing that another long day will begin in less than 5 hours, I somehow feel relaxed and at ease. It really is a blessing being able to work so hard and for so long because you love the job you do. It all seems worthwhile when you witness the enjoyment your guests have when seeing animals up close that they’ve only ever seen on TV, in books, or at the zoo. For me too, the excitement of not knowing what your next day in the bush or tomorrow’s game drive might bring makes waking up after only a few hours sleep not only easy, but enjoyable.

I can’t wait for all the other firsts I will get to experience here at Kapama in the months to come, and look forward to sharing them with you!

Till next time,

Kevin – Kapama River Lodge
