We have been very blessed in the last three months to have three elephant calves born – one every month. There is something about a baby elephant that makes your day, whether they are playing with their siblings or trying to understand what this funny long thing is at the end of their face, which in due time will take many long months to get used to.
Winter is pone when the elephants need to get to higher ground in the cold mornings and evenings to keep their calves out of the elements of the winter. I have been lucky enough to get a clear and lengthy look at our newest arrivals on drive yesterday afternoon. They are still not sure if it is safe to move away from the safety of their mothers under their bellies yet. They are like little balls of energy running around trying to get a grip on their new surroundings. It is truly a miracle of life that I am lucky enough to witness.
