Unexpected chase

Kapama Ranger Blog

We were on our morning safari and we expected it to be an average drive. However, we were proved wrong and what an amazing sighting it was. Myself and my guests were watching our big male and female lions sleeping on the water’s edge. Since lions can sleep for up to 20 hours per day, we thought that they would be there most of the day.

Unexpectedly, a large herd of buffalo came to drink water, despite the presence of the lions. Buffalo are extremely dependent on water so they will never stray far away from it. Luckily for the buffalo, the lions did not show much interest. However, the hippos did not want tolerate the buffalo’s presence. For hippos, the water is their safe haven. Therefore, if they feel threatened they will most likely attack. The hippos ran and chased away the buffalo and with their commotion, the buffalo chased the lions away.

This was an extremely unexpected morning and with all the excitement and adrenalin, my guests and I were ecstatic.
